What is a vehicle inspection checklist?

A vehicle inspection checklist — also called a vehicle inspection form — is a standard list of the points a technician checks on a vehicle during a visit: brakes, tires, fluids, belts, hoses, lights, and steering, no matter why the car came in. What every technician should check.

A complete walk-around covers the whole vehicle, not just what the customer came in for. A thorough multi-point inspection includes:

  1. Lights & electrical

    Headlights, tail lights, turn signals, horn operation, dash warning lights

  2. Wipers & glass

    Wiper blades, windshield and glass condition

  3. Under hood

    Engine oil, coolant level, belts & hoses, battery, air filter, cabin air filter

  4. Fluids

    Transmission fluid, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid
