How Much Does an AI Receptionist Cost for an Auto Repair Shop? (2026 Prices)

8 min readShopOS

Quick answer

Standalone AI receptionist services cost about $29 to $349 a month, billed by the minute or by the customer, and they sit on top of the shop software you already pay for. Receptionists sold with shop software are priced on top of that platform: AutoLeap AIR is $99 or $199 a month plus an AutoLeap subscription. Autograff ShopOS Pro is $350 per shop per month, or $300 per shop per month on an annual contract for the whole shop management system with the AI receptionist, AI insights and AI Copilot included, and no call overage.

Prices checked October 19, 2026 on each vendor's own pricing page. Disclosure: published by Autograff, maker of Autograff ShopOS.

What do AI receptionists cost? Published prices

There are two ways to buy one. A standalone AI receptionist service answers your phone and passes the result to you; it knows nothing about your shop beyond what you tell it, and you keep paying for your shop software separately. A receptionist sold with shop management software is priced on top of that platform's subscription, or, in the case of ShopOS, included in it.

This category reprices often, so re-check before budgeting. Only one row in that table is not a receptionist added to something else: the last one.

What ShopOS Pro includes for $350 a month

ShopOS Pro is not an AI receptionist with a price tag. It is the shop management system, with the AI layer on top, in one subscription:

  • The full shop management system. Online booking, the job board, estimates and invoicing, digital vehicle inspections, parts, VIN lookup, embedded payments and a fleet portal: everything in ShopOS Base.
  • AI receptionist. Answers on the shop's existing number, including after hours. Books and reschedules onto the schedule against real availability, and answers "is my car ready?" from the live repair order.
  • AI insights. Spots the jobs that quietly don't make money.
  • AI Copilot. Built into the same system your team already works in.
  • Every user login, no setup fee and no call overage. Priced per shop, so the bill does not move with call volume or headcount.

That changes what the comparison is. A standalone receptionist at $99 a month is $99 on top of your shop software. AutoLeap AIR Starter is $99 on top of an AutoLeap subscription, whose core plans start at $199 a month, so $298 before overage. ShopOS Pro at $350 a month is the shop software and the receptionist together. (ShopOS Base, the shop system without the AI layer, has no software subscription when you use ShopOS Payments.)

Which billing model will cost you least?

Four models are in use, and the cheapest one depends on your call pattern rather than the headline price.

Per minute. You pay for talk time; common among standalone services. Good for shops whose calls are short and transactional: booking an oil change, confirming an address. Bad for shops whose callers talk at length about a symptom.

Per call. You pay per conversation regardless of length, as on AutoLeap AIR. Good where calls run long. Bad where you get a high volume of thirty-second inquiries, spam and supplier calls, each of which bills the same as a real booking.

Per unique customer. You pay once per caller per month however often they call; some standalone services work this way. This is the metered model to look at if you run multi-day jobs where the same customer calls three or four times for an update, which, for a shop doing fleet or diagnostic work, is most of them.

Per shop. You pay one figure regardless of calls, minutes or callers. ShopOS Pro works this way: $350 a month whether the phone rings fifty times or a thousand.

On a metered plan, work out your own average call length and the share of repeat callers before comparing quotes. A shop with a two-minute average and heavy repeat calling can pay very different amounts under the three metered models at identical list prices.

What the quote usually leaves out

Six things, and together they frequently exceed the subscription.

Setup and onboarding. AutoLeap AIR publishes a $100 setup fee that may apply on every plan, including pay as you go.

Overage. The number to model, not the base rate. On the smallest standalone plans, a busy month can double the bill once the allowance runs out. Some services charge sharply less per extra unit on higher tiers, so stepping up a tier can be cheaper than staying put and paying overage.

Integration. Whether the receptionist can write to your calendar or shop management system, and whether that connection is included. Standalone services typically connect to a general calendar, or to other software through an automation tool such as Zapier, rather than directly to shop software. Platform-tied products limit you the other way: AutoLeap states that AIR's calendar integration is for AutoLeap users, so if you run a different shop system you need to confirm what booking actually looks like.

Messaging. SMS confirmations and follow-up are sometimes a separate line or a higher tier rather than included.

Your existing software. A standalone receptionist is an addition to what you already pay, not a replacement for it.

Staff time after the call. The least visible cost. If every booking still needs a service advisor to re-enter details, the subscription bought you coverage, not capacity.

How to work out whether it pays for itself

Do not assume every missed call is a lost job. Most shops that run this honestly find the real opportunity is a fraction of the raw missed-call count.

Estimated monthly gross profit opportunity = relevant missed calls × booking conversion rate × average gross profit per job

Four inputs, from your own records:

  1. How many calls went unanswered or to voicemail last month?
  2. How many were genuine prospects, excluding suppliers, existing customers chasing updates, and sales calls?
  3. What share of answered inquiries normally convert to booked work?
  4. What is your average gross profit per job, not your average repair order?

Compare that against the total monthly cost: subscription, plus expected overage, plus integration, plus any setup fee spread over a year.

Our missed call cost calculator runs this with your own figures. For the wider picture of what unanswered calls do to a shop, see what a missed call actually costs a repair shop.

Is an AI receptionist cheaper than a person?

On the monthly number, obviously. A full-time service advisor costs multiples of even the most expensive AI plan here.

But that framing oversells it, and shops who buy on that comparison are usually disappointed. An AI receptionist answers, qualifies, captures and books. A service advisor sells additional work, handles the customer who is angry about a bill, makes a judgment call about whether a vehicle is safe to drive, and reads a caller well enough to know when the described symptom isn't the real problem.

The fair comparison is narrower: against the routine call volume both could handle, and against the alternative of those calls going to voicemail. On that basis the case is usually strong. On "replace a person", it usually isn't.

A traditional human answering service sits between the two, commonly around $200 to $500 a month, and is worth pricing if your objection is to a machine answering at all.

What should a shop actually budget?

A rough guide, assuming you want booking rather than message-taking:

Under 50 relevant calls a month: about $29 to $99 a month. The entry tiers of standalone services, or AutoLeap AIR's $1 per call pay as you go if you are on AutoLeap, which suits lumpy volume.

50 to 200 calls a month: about $79 to $129 a month. Mid-tier standalone plans, or AutoLeap AIR Starter at $99 for 200 calls. This is where most independents land, and where the billing model starts to matter financially.

200 to 750 calls a month: about $129 to $199 a month. Upper standalone tiers, or AIR Growth at $199 for 500 calls.

750+ calls, or multi-location: $299 to $349 a month on the top standalone tiers, or a flat-rate platform. This is where metering bites: at 750 calls a month, AutoLeap AIR Growth's included 500 plus 250 overage at $0.75 comes to $386.50, before the AutoLeap subscription. A flat $350 per shop per month with no call overage, as ShopOS Pro is priced, stops moving at exactly the point the others start climbing.

Every band above is the receptionist alone. Add what you pay for shop software to each one before comparing it with ShopOS Pro, which at $350 a month is both.

Key takeaways

  • Standalone AI receptionist services cost about $29 to $349 a month, on top of your shop software.
  • AutoLeap AIR is $1 a call, or $99 or $199 a month, plus $0.75 per call overage, a possible $100 setup fee, and an AutoLeap subscription underneath. Shopmonkey publishes no standalone price for Front Desk Concierge.
  • ShopOS Pro is $350 per shop per month, or $300 per shop per month on an annual contract for the whole shop management system plus the AI receptionist, AI insights and AI Copilot, with no call overage and no setup fee.
  • Metered plans bill by the minute, the call or the customer, and the cheapest depends on how long your calls run and how often the same customer calls back.
  • Model the overage, not just the base rate. It frequently exceeds the subscription.
  • Calculate payback from your own missed-call records, conversion rate and gross profit per job, not from a vendor's missed-call statistic.
  • Against a full-time hire the saving is real but the comparison is unfair; against voicemail it is the honest case.

The bottom line

The cheapest AI receptionist is rarely the cheapest option, because the price you compare is the subscription and the cost you pay is the subscription plus overage plus integration plus the shop software underneath it plus the work still left for your team.

Get quotes against your own call volume, ask each one to demonstrate the same four scenarios, and add up the total before deciding. ShopOS Pro puts the whole shop management system and the AI layer (the receptionist, AI insights and AI Copilot) in one subscription at $350 per shop per month, or $300 per shop per month on an annual contract, with every login included and no call overage.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI receptionist cost for an auto repair shop?
Standalone AI receptionist services cost about $29 to $349 a month on published plans checked October 19, 2026, on top of the shop software you already pay for. AutoLeap AIR is $1 per call pay as you go, $99 a month for 200 calls or $199 a month for 500, plus an AutoLeap subscription. Shopmonkey publishes no standalone price for its Front Desk Concierge. Autograff ShopOS Pro is $350 per shop per month, or $300 per shop per month on an annual contract, and includes the full shop management system as well as the AI receptionist, AI insights and AI Copilot.
Are AI receptionists charged per call or per minute?
Both, and some standalone services charge per unique customer instead. Per-minute billing suits shops with short routine calls. Per-call billing, as on AutoLeap AIR, suits shops with long calls. Per-customer billing suits shops running multi-day jobs where the same customer calls repeatedly. Autograff ShopOS Pro is priced per shop, so call volume does not change the bill.
Is an AI receptionist cheaper than hiring a service advisor?
On monthly cost, yes, by a wide margin, since AI receptionists are priced in the tens to low hundreds of dollars per month against a full-time salary. But they do different jobs. An AI receptionist answers, qualifies and books. A service advisor sells work, manages difficult conversations and makes judgment calls. The comparison is only fair for the routine call volume both could handle.
What is usually excluded from an AI receptionist quote?
Setup or onboarding fees, overage charges once the included allowance is used, calendar or shop-software integration, SMS and other messaging, the shop software itself, and the staff time still needed after each call. AutoLeap AIR publishes a $100 setup fee that may apply and a $0.75 per-call overage above its included allowance, and notes that its calendar integration is for AutoLeap users.
What is a typical overage charge on an AI receptionist plan?
Standalone services meter overage per extra minute or per extra customer, and the rate usually falls on higher tiers. AutoLeap AIR charges $0.75 per extra call. A shop near the top of its allowance should model the overage, because it frequently exceeds the base subscription. Autograff ShopOS Pro has no call overage.
Does an AI receptionist cost extra on top of shop management software?
Usually, yes. A standalone AI receptionist is an additional subscription alongside your existing shop software, and AutoLeap AIR is priced on top of an AutoLeap subscription. Autograff ShopOS Pro is the exception: at $350 per shop per month, or $300 per shop per month on an annual contract, it is the shop management system itself, with the AI receptionist, AI insights and AI Copilot included and no call overage.
How do you calculate whether an AI receptionist pays for itself?
Multiply the number of missed calls that were genuine booking opportunities by your booking conversion rate and your average gross profit per job, then compare that figure against the total monthly cost including overage, integration and the shop software it sits on. Use your own call records rather than assuming every missed call is a lost job.
Is a cheap AI receptionist worth it for a small shop?
For a shop missing a handful of calls a week, an entry-level standalone plan from about $29 a month can be enough, because the job is simply answering and capturing the caller. The cheaper tiers generally do less after the call, so the saving is real only if your team is happy to do the booking and record-keeping manually.
